Mantis Shrimps, Stomatopoda

Seen when diving over the sand next to the reef at Mae Haad and Chaloklum Bay on Koh Phangan, they quickly withdraw into their holes if alarmed so are not easy to photograph on scuba dives.
We never saw one out of its shelter until 2016 – then its banded body suggested that this must be a “spearing” mantis shrimp, Lysiosquilla maculata.
2015 saw the discovery of our first “smashing” mantis (note the cylindrical rather than flat eyes), which we think is Odontodactylus japonicus.
Their fascinating hunting techniques (and more) are explained on Wikipedia
