Low-seasonal Observations from a sultry Koh Phangan

After a surprisingly busy start to the month, it’s now low season. Koh Phangan is once again a peaceful, laid-back and very hot/humid island. Mae Haad Beach is fairly deserted and you can even drive around Thongsala without wondering where the next crazy driver is coming from! The SCUBA diving is still good – Sail Rock has excellent visibility, mild current and the occasional Whale Shark. Although Chaloklum Bay is a little cloudy (but still dive-able) the reefs at Koh Ma and Mae Haad are fine for Discover SCUBA Diving, long shallow fun dives, and snorkelling of course. As ever...

It’s the February update from Chaloklum Diving!

Whale Shark sightings, Anthong Marine Park trips plus a whole lot of Divemaster trainees! It’s been all action at Chaloklum Diving of late, as Koh Phangan is quite busy and the weather (touch wood!) has been behaving reasonably well… Up to a few days ago we were having regular Whale Shark encounters at Sail Rock – we’ve got some nice photos and a few videos on file, as well as a bunch of divers with happy memories! Diving conditions are a little rough out there at the moment but are forecast to be calming soon. Good news is that we’ve been able to start taking...

A belated Happy New Year and Good Diving from Chaloklum!

It’s a great relief to be able to offer good diving conditions this January. Looking back to the same time last year on Koh Phangan we were not so lucky! At the moment Sail Rock has clear water and little current, our local dive sites are clearing up – fine for dive courses and snorkelling already, and diving trips to the Marine Park and maybe Koh Tao are in the pipeline… And the dive centre is reasonably busy, principally with PADI Open Water Diver courses and fun diving trips. As ever we do also have some PADI Pro training on the go as the mighty Honza works hard to...

The Dive School Autumnal Report

After a relatively hectic August on Koh Phangan, September has not turned out to be a busy month for the dive school – although as so often happens, we’ve had some great SCUBA diving and snorkelling to offer. OK – so the local diving, especially at Mae Haad Reef and Koh Ma, has sometimes been affected by the prevailing South-westerly wind but Chaloklum Bay has remained calm – continuing fine for PADI courses, SCUBA reviews and for Nick to do some underwater photography… Our biggest frustration has been that Anthong Marine Park has had consistently great...

It’s a laid back June on Koh Phangan

It’s a laid back June on Koh Phangan

As usual we’re experiencing glorious hot, sunny, calm weather and the island is really quiet! It does look like the whale sharks have moved on to somewhere else in the Gulf of Thailand for a (hopefully short) while, but we’re not worrying as the SCUBA diving and snorkelling at Sail Rock remains especially fine. As it’s low season on Koh Phangan there’s still not a lot of demand for different diving trips as yet – not long now… We hear that conditions at most of the Koh Tao dive sites are good but the prevailing summer south-westerly wind is messing with...
