Molpadiida

The Molpadiidae are a truly obscure family of Sea Cucumbers. We had no idea what this beast was for years – seen drifting over the sand at Mae Haad Reef, Koh Phangan. Unlike most Holothurians it has an elongated body, smooth skin, no tube feet and in this case is close to neutrally buoyant. We think that this is a deeper water creature that somehow got carried into the...

Looks like a busy August on Koh Phangan

It’s August already, and Koh Phangan is getting much more lively. It’s that time of the year when everyone wants to do their PADI course and go fun diving or snorkelling. This is fine for the team at the dive centre – we like to be busy and especially love the chance to offer a variety of dive trips. A South-westerly wind continues to blow when it shouldn’t, making the surface a bit wavy, but we’re still making big boat trips to Sail Rock and shore diving in Chaloklum Bay. It’s still a little rough on the West coast of Koh Phangan at Mae Haad Reef and Koh...

Low-seasonal Observations from a sultry Koh Phangan

After a surprisingly busy start to the month, it’s now low season. Koh Phangan is once again a peaceful, laid-back and very hot/humid island. Mae Haad Beach is fairly deserted and you can even drive around Thongsala without wondering where the next crazy driver is coming from! The SCUBA diving is still good – Sail Rock has excellent visibility, mild current and the occasional Whale Shark. Although Chaloklum Bay is a little cloudy (but still dive-able) the reefs at Koh Ma and Mae Haad are fine for Discover SCUBA Diving, long shallow fun dives, and snorkelling of course. As ever...

It’s time to take it easy on Koh Phangan!

In the period of about 1 week Koh Phangan has changed from rather hectic, high-season mode to a laid-back tropical island once more! Instead of a busy diving boat and dive sites we’ve more space both onboard and underwater – and although it’s nice to work hard for a while, the Chaloklum Diving team are not complaining at this peaceful start to September. Diving conditions remain great at Sail Rock, and with the excitement of several whale shark appearances last month, it has remained our favourite destination. We have enjoyed a diving and snorkelling trip or 2 up to Koh...

Sundial Snail, Architectonica perspectiva

This small, beautifully shaped and patterned sea snail is frequently seen when we’re diving on the sand outside the reef at Koh Phangans local dive sites – especially at Mae Haad/Koh...
