Hermit Crabs; Diogenidae

Hermit crabs are not true crabs as they have some sort of tail section hidden in their shell – which makes them closer relations to the lobsters. They can be found when we’re diving most of the sites around Koh Phangan.

Other Hermit Crabs; Paguroidea

A few more from the hermit family - mainly Diogenidae plus 1 of the land dwelling Coenobitidae.

White spotted Hermit Crab, Dardanus megistos

Our commonest and largest aquatic hermit crab is not so shy.

Hairy Red Hermit Crab, Dardanus lagopodes

This hermit crab seems to be quite active by day.

Jewelled Anemone Hermit Crab, Dardanus gemmatus

We have yet to see this hermit crab with a sea anemone on its shell!
